The Best Of Bridal Asia 2008
The haute couture fashion by India's leading names in bridal design.
BRIDAL ASIA, one of the most eagerly awaited and sought after destinations for festive and bridal shopping, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year with two evenings of haute couture fashion by India's leading names in bridal design, on the 4th and 5th October 2008 at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi.
The evening of 4th October saw bridal finery by couturiers Tarun Tahiliani, Shane & Falguni Peacock and Ritu Beri. Sub-continental bridal fashion was showcased by Honey Waqar of Pakistan and Maheen Khan of Bangladesh, both of whom are exclusively showing their collections only at Bridal Asia in India. Adding luxurious shimmer to Ritu Beri's bridal ensembles were jewels by Amrapali and to the Peacock's line was Ghanasingh's jewellery.
5th October was also a soiree of fashion with shows by stalwarts Pallavi Jaikishan, Meera & Muzaffar Ali, Raghavendra Rathore, Sabyasachi and Bhairavi Jaikishan. Queenie Dhody's jewels beautifully complemented Pallavi's bridal couture creations while Alpana Gujral's precious baubles with Meera & Muzaffar Ali's designs created sheer magic on the ramp! Shital Bajaj's jewellery added the glitterati to the Bhairavi's creations.
The ethereal Indian bride was beautifully showcased in various forms and design styles with each ensemble more striking than the last and almost every Indian technique being presented in a grand amalgamation of tradition, style, colors with modern day silhouettes and forms. An apt celebration of the Great Indian Wedding breathtakingly captured over two elegant evenings of drama and poetry on the ramp!!
Bridal Asia turns Ten in Style!
While India's leading models elegantly walked down the ramp for Bridal Asia, upping the occidental glam quotient were models Mehreen Syed and Nadia Hussain from Pakistan. Asha Kochhar and Harmeet Bajaj lent their expertise in choreography to make each presentation a stunning showcase of the myriads moods of the modern Indian bride while the event has been decorated by MAPSOR.
Bridal couture has never been more breathtakingly showcased than at the Bridal Asia's fashion evenings as a preview to the main exhibition. 10 years of offering design excellence has made Bridal Asia the most holistic and luxurious platform for designers to showcase their festive best - Inimitable in content, prolific in participation and exclusive in its offering.
Says Divya Gurwara, the charming, elegant host for the fashion soiree, "Bridal Asia has always been an offering from the heart. It has grown by leaps and bounds over the last ten years. However, what remains constant is our dedication to quality and exclusivity. Many a bridal show has come and gone, yet we remain committed to our philosophy of making Bridal Asia bigger, more beautiful and yet cutting edge in its design offering. As we turn ten this year, I feel humbled and yet proud of our achievement in making Bridal Asia one of the foremost platforms chosen by the best names of the Indian design world to launch their bridal designs, year after year!"

Bipasha Becomes A Bride
Wearing the show stopper, she looked lovely in an orange and pink lehenga.
Resplendent in an orange lehenga, Bong bombshell Bipasha Basu became a bride for designer Maheka Mirpuri. Mirpuri launched her latest bridal-wear collection at the Taj President, Mumbai on 3rd October 2008.
Mirpuri is hugely popular for her bridal designs and her latest bridal collection was as luscious as can be expected from one of India's top designers. Wearing the show stopper, Bipasha looked lovely in an orange and pink lehenga. The blouse was single shouldered with a huge flower accessorizing it. The back of the blouse was gorgeously held together by stonework. Maheka herself looked beautiful in an off-white, pink and purple outfit.
While Bips stole the show on the ramp, off the ramp all lights were focused on Manisha Koirala. The lady who rarely makes an appearance (onscreen and offscreen!) these days was seen in the front row at the show. She continues to be as hideously dressed as ever. Also spotted were Suman Ranganathan, Nisha Jamwal, Dolly Thakur, Anjala Zaveri, Esther Daswani.

A Bra For Every Mood
Shaaditimes brings to you a complete list of bras available and which occasions they are apt for.
Why should you joggle your assets when they can look more attractive covered up!
Do men prefer the bra-less all-over-the-place look? It's hard to say, and at the end of the day, every man has his own preference.
However, from the point of view of a woman, why should you even consider going bra-less when you know that a bra provides the essential support that your boobs need, it saves your anatomy from easy injuries, helps you walk better and taller, and given the right choice, it can even enhance your overall look and posture.
And there lies the crux - there is a huge choice of bras nowadays, something to suit every individual style and need.
Shun booby traps
Irrespective of what you choose, do remember that your bra must fit you well. Check for too-tightness by slipping two fingers separately under the band and straps of your bra. If you can't get them in, choose a different style even if your size is right. Also, the back band should run straight across your back. If the band is lifted, add some slack to the straps. Of course, it also goes without saying that your boobs shouldn't spill out under the bra or at the side of the bra cup!
Check for a too loose bra from the cup fabric - it must appear smooth. If it looks wrinkled, even though the bra is your size, the style is not right.
Quite asides fit, choose a bra that is made of fabric that suits the climate you live in. India's hot summers are conducive to cotton bras, not so to synthetic ones.
Also, do remember that wearing a bra at night restricts your lymph system from its rejuvenation process. Of course, if you've chosen right and your bra has helped you meet your purpose of enticing your better half, you needn't worry about having it off!
So here you are - Shaaditimes brings to you a complete list of all the different types of bras available and which occasions they are appropriate for. Run through these options and prepare to shop and stun your partner with your new cover-ups!

JJ Valaya is back with the Valaya Fall Winter collection of 2008-2009.
Concerned with incidents of exploitation of its subjects, the Ruler of the Kingdom of Valaya has decided to do away with undue confusion created by alien currencies and has proclaimed, via declaration no. 31 2008, that all further trade in his Kingdom will be carried out only in its newly introduced currency, 'The Valayan Royale'.
It is this spirit, along with the Kingdom's nomadic royal signature that inspires the JJ Valaya Fall Winter collection of 2008-2009. A glorious collection of the finest in womenswear and menswear will herald this new season of luxurious style. A couture line in splendid silks and georgettes, a palate that ranges from ivories to antique jewel tones, craft that remains unrivalled in today's day and age, all come together to create a unique experience in fashion and elegance. From signature Indian silhouettes to lush evening gowns, from regal menswear to the famed Valaya trousseaux, this is a collection that touches the soul.
About the Kingdom of Valaya:
We are the new royalty... a new Indian Raj that is determined to spread its wings globally. Our world, the Royal Kingdom of Valaya, though exalted, remains deeply associated with culture and our nomadic antecedents. We are truly, luxury personified. We are the vision of our Maverick Maharaja. We are indeed, the future of the past.
About JJ Valaya:
One of India's senior most and best known designers, JJ Valaya was born in the princely state of Rajasthan in India but spent most of his childhood traveling to different parts of the country due to his father's various postings in the army. The House of Valaya was founded in 1992 with the launch of its couture label.
Valaya's creative vision regarding elegance and edgy grandeur together with his brother's entrepreneurial abilities have been the key factors for the success of Valaya as a luxury brand. The brand today encompasses Couture, Diffusion, Ready-to-wear, Home and a CSR prerogative, The Valaya Magic Foundation (www.valayamagic.com).
A larger than life approach to luxury fashion & Lifestyle has been a signature of this maverick Maharaja! He believes that true style today is meant for those capable of carrying off both, the whimsical and the bold, and that's precisely the version of sophistication in the Nomadic Royal Valaya woman or man. It is the marriage of the uniqueness of India's craft and tradition with the energy and the ever-changing nature of contemporary fashion that sets the pace for Valaya.
JJ Valaya's success in the fashion industry has been recognized by a number of awards including The Prix d' Incitation at the young designers international competition held by the Concours.

Anna Singh's Store Launch - A Night Of 'Stars' And Crystals
Was it a launch or a movie awards night.View pics.
Was it a launch or a movie awards night, one wouldn't have known the difference. The launch of Anna Singh's first boutique in Bandra on Friday night saw the créme de la créme of Bollywood walk into the store to congratulate Anna and make it a night for her to remember. The theme seemingly being red, Anna and her staff were in glamorous attires welcoming the guests warmly.
Ayesha Shroff and Farah Khan (who had lent their creative inputs into the décor of the store) gave Anna a helping hand. Kajol did the honour of launching the store and was accompanied by sister Tanisha. Unfortunately the duo left within a short while owing to Kajol's ill health.
The shutterbugs did not stop snapping till midnight with a host of celebrities walking into the store soon after. Some of them being Karan Johar, Arpita Khan, Chunky Pandey, Sophie Choudhary, Zarine Khan, Suzanne Roshan, Queenie Dhodie, Kim Sharma, Preeti Jhangiani, Azharuddin and Sangeeta Bijlani, Chayaa Mommaya, Achla Sachdev, Vikram Chatwal, Sonu Sood, Poonam Dhillon, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Ashish Chowdhary (minus wife Samita), Boman Irani with wife, Neelam, Ketan Mehta, a less seen Sooraj Bharjatiya also walked in with family, Divya Khosla Kumar, Kehkashan and a lot more.
But what made the night was the unexpected entry of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Stormed by the media, she managed to check out the store swiftly and give them a byte or two and left early apparently to catch a flight. Gauri Khan too entered for a short while.
Anna Singh's store consists of stunning signature print dresses, Swarovski encrusted clutches, belts, jewellery and indo-western tops along with a funky menswear line that is one of a kind - all under the same roof! Not only is the store solely owned by Anna but she has also designed the store along with Ayesha Shroff with invaluable inputs from Zarine Khan, Suzanne Roshan and candles by Dimple Kapadia!
Most certainly worth a visit!

Neha Dhupia Launches Secret Curves
Primarily young, energetic and extremely wearable lingerie.
It was a hot, hot evening at The Taj Lands End, Mumbai in more ways than one. Bollywood actress and former Miss India Neha Dhupia launched New York based lingerie house Secret Curves in India. Also present at the event were model Marc Robinson, and designer Neeta Lulla and Narendra Kumar.
Dhupia came to the event looking sizzling hot herself in a white fitted dress with a soft boat neck and ruched waist. Dhupia was flaunting more curves than all the lingerie models put together. We especially love the clutch she carried to the event.
The Secret Curves collection was primarily young, energetic and extremely wearable. Some pieces were teasingly sexy and very appropriate for a shy, new bride.
Our favourite picks:
- We especially loved the racy green and black lace confection. Magolicious and perfect for the honeymoon!
- The white lace set is also innocently sexy and just right for the first night. We love the added ribbon detail on it.

Mysticism Of Perfumes
What do you imagine when you hear the word perfume?
- Sacha Guitry (actor)
Say the word 'perfume' and the first thing that comes to mind is a nice smelling woman. Indeed perfume and beauty have been associated from times immemorial. Cleopatra, the famous 19th century Egyptian queen had a colossal knowledge of perfumes and aromatic oils. Even till today it's hard to imagine beauty without imagining a nice scent.
Fragrances and attraction go hand in hand in nature as well. Flowers produce nectar to attract insects, which help in pollination. Animals produce pheromones to attract mates from as far as 10 Km (6.2 miles) away. It was thus natural for humans to follow the league. The use of herbs for fragrances was prevalent since prehistoric times, use of flowers for fragrances however came much later.
Much of the aromatic products in the ancient times were incense based, hence it comes as no surprise that perfumes were called 'per fumum' in Latin which means 'through smoke'. From this were derived the words 'perfume' (English) and 'parfum' (French).
The oldest traces of manufacture of perfumes have been found in Pyrgos, Cyprus which date back to 2000 BC. The perfumes were discovered in an ancient perfumery factory. This goes to show how widely fragrances were sought after even in the ancient times.
In ancient times, ironically people used herbs and spices, like bergamot, almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin but not flowers. A Persian priest Avicenna for the first time used flowers to extract oils by using distillation. Until the 14th century fragrances were mainly oil based. Hungarians were the first to produce modern perfume. They called it the Hungary water.
During the Renaissance, perfumes were used by rich noblemen to disguise body odour. It was due to this patronage that the western perfumery industry was created and flourished. By the 18th century, aromatic plants were being grown in the Grasse region, which still produces them. Even today, France remains the foremost in European perfume design and Trade.
Perfumes make ideal gifts and also serve as memorabilia. Tourists from all over the world carry perfumes back home from their destinations. French perfumes being particularly popular, are the best in the world including makers like Chanel, Cartier and Dior.
In recent years, it has become a trend for celebrities to sign contracts with perfume houses to associate their name with a perfume brand. This also serves as a self-promotion campaign. Some of these perfumes are Curious Hearts endorsed by Britney Spears, Celine Dion by Celine Dion, True Star (backed by Tommy Hilfiger) endorsed by Enrique Iglesias and Miami Glow by Jennifer Lopez. This number of celebrity-endorsed perfumes has been increasing by the day because at the end of the day not many can stay away from the mysticism of perfumes.

Wedding Wear - Melodramatic Mermaid Looks
Mermaid Lehenga or a western type ball gown may be the bridal look for you.
Summer weddings remind one of Monet, larger than life canvasses washed in poetic water-coloured romantic fabrics diluted by pastel memories of an era long gone. So it should come as no surprise that along with the revival of royalty at all leading ateliers with the perfunctory evoking of earthy Indian crafts like chikan, ari, sequence and beadwork brides are looking for a way to look rich, opulent as well as summery and chic!
Women today, especially brides, dress to complement their décor, groom, and nature. They seek to present their aura and mystique with perfection on their important day. In finding the perfect ensemble for their demanding clients, many Indian designers are glancing West-to-European based courtiers' prowess to create full-length wisps of satin and silk blanketed with ruffles, sequins, pearls, and appliqués in addition to mandatory swarovski crystals, ethnic badla, and tila work.
Desi Designers seem unified in giving their stamp of approval to the mermaid lehenga or the western evening gown. The Mermaid lehenga is a slim fitted skirt shaped to your body with a tight bodice. It can be worn with a bustier, long choli or traditional sari type blouse. And keeping pace with the art nouveau look is the latest trend in making a decision on line. It is not uncommon to find many NRIs ordering their wedding wear on-line.
Shaaditimes caught up with Neeta Paul of Neeta Paul Creations to find out why the Mermaid Lehenga or a western type ball gown may be the look you're after if you're tying the nups this year.
"The look is Western but the work and embellishments are traditional. So it's mostly a combination of Western and traditional," says Paul.
She observed, "Most Indian woman don't have model perfect bodies and are shorter and more voluptuous. This look works well on woman of any size provided it's been cut and tailored properly." She continues, "This also works well with the summer months as the pastels look strong and rich against the badla and heavy gold/silver work. Also if the bride wants to wear something less heavy it can be made in a range of different lighter weight fabrics from chanderis, organzas, organdy, chiffon or a combination accented by brocade or zari borders and appliqué work."
According to Paul, this is the one day from her tiara to her jootis perfection prevails. Thus, the jewellery, accessories, hair, make-up, can either enhance or take away from the beauty of the gown. "Most importantly it is the bride's day and what enhances her is what counts."

The Midas Touch: Vandana Agarwal
A collection that engraves an Indian woman's innermost feelings, and desire to look beautiful.
Ageless and ethereal jewelry has always been a part of an Indian woman's ensemble. ''An Indian woman's innermost feelings, and desire are reflected not only in her grace and beauty, but also in the ornaments enveloping her,'' says designer Vandana Agarwal.
Agarwal recently launched the Midas Collection at her upscale showroom - Studio Midas Touch located at Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri, Mumbai. The collection boasts of a pomp and splendor reminiscent of the jewelry collection based on historical designs dating back to days of Shah Jahan.
A jewelry connoisseur and stylist for over a decade, Agarwal, joined forces with one of Jaipur's leading and reputed jeweler's Purushottam Poddar to recreate an aura and heritage of jewelry craftsmanship dating back to 2000 BC. Midas Touch specializes in handcrafted Jadau, period Victorian art deco and one of kind diamond / gold trousseau ensembles.
"Our worksmiths (karigars) have generations of training and follow the same technique created by ancestors hailing back to the Mughal era," says Agarwal. "Jadau or kundan is the complement to meenakari (enameling technique) where floral, vegetal designs are etched on the one side of a necklace, bracelet, ring etc. The opposite side is embedded with precious stones in 24 carat jewelry in a precise process known as Jadau."
A jewelry lover for decades, Agarwal met with Mr. Poddar in Jaipur and found the visionary to complete her designs into reality. "Our atelier has all types of jewelry starting from as low as Rs 5,000 and up. We make contemporary and trendy designs which are also traditional by definition and can be worn by all women whether they are living in an urban centre or a smaller city."
According to Agarwal traditional Rajasthani jewelry has seen a resurgence as designs once commissioned for Kings, emperors and their royal courts are now replicated for the common man. "What was once not affordable can be made for the common man and woman," believes Agarwal and adds, "And although the value of gold is still considered one of the primary concerns when purchasing wedding sets the bride and the wedding families are now looking at longevity, and beauty.
In other words, the labor value is considered as important as the gold value and there is no denying Rajasthani jewelry holds its own as an heirloom which has traditionally been passed on from generation to generation," states Agarwal.
The majesty of these ornaments leaves you breathless making even the most ordinary bride look royal. She also believes, "This particular jewelry is fast catching on with the NRI community and we have many orders from brides abroad for at least one piece for their bridal trousseau." Agarwal loves the bracelets made from clear "pulkis " (uncut white diamonds). "This is something indigenous to our heritage and culture and looks elegant with a simple sari or adds the luster to the bridal lehenga."
The Midas Collection adorns Bollywood royalty, business-people throughout India and working yuppies. "I believe the new generation despite the trends still likes to have something of an era gone. As you can see from the detail work on these ornaments," she shows the necklace and earrings, "the lotus, elephant and floral designs are a decorative art which has endured in India due to the sheer enormity of its beauty. Timeless," gushes Agarwal and ends, "Though inner beauty always prevails and I believe there is a princess in each woman and Jadau is the only way to cherish her."
Designs are available for viewing by appointment and online www.midascollection.co.in
The Studio: Midas Touch is located at Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri.
For more information contact Vandana Agarwal at info@midascollection.co.in.
Jadau Facts
- Engraved traditional art of the Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- Also known by the names of "Jadau " and "Jadtar", this form of jewelry was introduced in India by the Mughals.
- The craftsmen of India picked up this art and made it popular and famous. Today, it is a thriving industry, which attracts buyers from all over the world.
- The Jadau jewelry is basically jewelry in which precious and semi precious stones, gems, crystals and beads are embedded. The jewelry on which the stones and gems are to be set is melted a bit. When the gold becomes pliable, the stones are set on it with great precision and artistry. After that, it is allowed to cool down and the stones, gems, etc. get fixed on it without any adhesive or carvings. These days, Jadau is done on not just jewelry but also jewelry boxes and delicate showpieces.
- Store kundan jewelry in white paper packets or white cotton cloth. Avoid storing it in velvet boxes as the gold around the gems might get tarnished.
